Yellow Fever in Brazil (Monkeys)

The media has reported on monkey deaths in the Federal District of Brazil, located in the Central Plateau of the Brazilian Highlands.

On 30 September 2015, a group of monkey deaths were reported in the administrative region of Lago Norte in the Federal District. The monkeys were found in an area close to farms and homes and subsequently yellow fever virus was confirmed in the animals. On 2 October 2015, in response to the monkey deaths, the Secretariat of Health implemented yellow fever vaccination for those living and working in the affected area as a precaution.

Yellow Fever vaccination is usually recommended for travellers visiting the Federal District of Brazil. Travellers should also take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
