Japanese Encephalitis in Philippines

The media has reported on cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) in the Philippines. Seven cases of JE have been reported in the Cordillera region on the island of Luzon. Three cases were identified in Benguet and three in Kalinga; all have fully recovered. The final case was identified in Apayao and continues to be monitored but is said to be improving.

Advice for Travellers

The incidence of JE is high in the Philippines and immunisation programmes are not established. Human cases are reported throughout the country including Manila.

JE vaccine is sometimes advised for travellers at higher risk.
