Zika Virus in Brazil

Zika virus continues to be reported from Brazil. Five confirmed cases were identified in four localities of Mato Grosso state in the west of the country. Two cases in Rondonpolis; one case each in Cuiaba, Tesouro and Varzea Grande.

Cases of zika virus were also reported from Alagoas state in northeastern Brazil. Fifteen confirmed cases have been identified in seven municipalities: Maceio (7), Mata Grande (3), one case each in Arapiraca, Delmiro Gouveia, Maribondo and Santana do Ipanema.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
