Typhoid Fever in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur)

22 October 2015

The media has reported on a spike in the number of cases of typhoid in Kuala Lumpur; 32 cases have been reported since August 2015. Health officials suspect that illegal immigrants working in the food industry could be the cause.

Food handlers working legally are required to have medical screening and compulsory typhoid vaccine before being allowed to work in the food industry. Typhoid boosters every 3 years are also compulsory to continue working. The investigation is ongoing.

The Ministry of Health is conducting a typhoid vaccination programme, targeting all food handlers, whether working legally or illegally. Awareness of prevention by good hygiene practices is also being promoted.
