Rabies Infection (Canine) (Human Exposure) in Indonesia (Bali)

23 October 2015

A tourist visiting the island of Bali in Indonesia required rabies post-exposure treatment after being bitten on the leg by a stray dog.

The incident occurred whilst the woman was visiting the popular tourist site of Pura Tanah Lot temple, located on the coast of West Bali, at the village of Beraban in the Tabanan Regency. The woman was apparently chased by the dog before it bit her on the calf and ankle. Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis including rabies immunoglobulin was commenced in Bali and continued when the tourist returned home to Taiwan on 16 October 2015.

Subsequently, rabies virus was confirmed in the dog

Advice for Travellers

Bali is a popular destination for UK travellers. The rabies situation is not yet under control in Bali and continues to pose a risk for travellers. Travellers should be made aware of the risk and avoid animal contact and report any bites promptly. Pre-exposure vaccination should be considered for those at risk.
