Cholera in Myanmar

27 October 2015

An outbreak of cholera has been reported from the townships of Kawkareik and Kyain Seikgyi, Kayin state in the southeast of Myanmar on the border with Thailand. The outbreak began in August 2015, and has affected 61 villages in the area, with around 217 cases and 12 deaths reported. In some areas the incidence of new cases is declining, however, increasing in others; government health services are inaccessible for most of the affected villages.

The emergency response to the outbreak includes treatment, referral, health awareness campaign and continued monitoring for the next two months.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
