An outbreak of pertussis has been reported by the Ministry of Health in El Sareif Beni Hussein in North Darfur. The outbreak began early in September 2015, and as of 7 October, a total of 323 suspected cases have been identified. Laboratory samples were collected from 13 suspected cases and of those, 4 were confirmed as pertussis infection.
An immunisation campaign against pertussis is underway, targeting children under 5-years-of-age in the affected areas.
The last outbreak of pertussis in El Sareif Beni Hussein occurred in 2013.

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of pertussis vaccine in accordance with the UK schedule. The JCVI recommends pertussis boosters for pregnant women, but not for other adults in the UK.
