Viral Haemorrhagic Fever in Sudan (Darfur)

The Ministry of Health for Sudan and the World Health Organization have reported an outbreak of viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF) in Darfur, western Sudan. Between 29 August - 25 October 2015, a total of 182 suspected cases, including 103 deaths have been reported across Darfur. The worst affected state is West Darfur with 110 suspected cases, followed by North and Central Darfur with 33 suspected cases each.

Laboratory samples have been tested from 36 suspected cases and contacts. West Nile virus was confirmed in 4 samples and chikungunya virus was confirmed in another 4 samples. All samples were negative for yellow fever, Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever, dengue fever and Rift Valley fever.

Teams have been deployed to the affected states. Vector control activities and infection control measures have also been initiated. Additional pumps, fogging machines and insecticides will be transported to the affected states.
