Chikungunya Virus Infection in India

Chikungunya virus infection has been reported from Karnataka state in the south-west of India. Since the beginning of 2015, a total of 1774 cases have been recorded in the state. The worst affected area is Bengaluru City with 432 cases, followed by Bengaluru Urban district with 332 cases. These figures equate to a three-fold increase compared with the same time period of 2014.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
