Measles in Egypt

11 November 2015

The media has reported on a national measles vaccination (MMR) campaign in Egypt. The Ministry of Health is targeting 24 million children from 9 months to 10 years as 5000 measles cases have been recorded in Egypt thus far in 2015. This compares with 1740 cases in the same time period in 2014.

The campaign began on 31 October 2015, and 14.9 million children were immunised in the first week. The campaign is scheduled to continue until 21 November 2015.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-13 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months. Unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
