Cholera in Haiti

Heavy rains in Haiti during October has resulted in flooding in several areas of the country; worst affected are the departments of North, Artibonite, South and West.

There has also been a resurgence of cholera in several communes and the worst affected include: Cite Soleil (91 cases), Marigot (51), St. Mark (36) and Jacmel (33 cases). Cholera is endemic in Haiti and since the beginning of Janurary to 19 September 2015, a cumulative total of 22 511 cases has been recorded.

The Ministry of Health and partners have intensified rapid response activities to the resurgence of cholera cases, including: distribution of chlorinated product, community awareness, decontamination of houses, dormitories and sanitary facilities.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
