Dengue Fever in Egypt

An outbreak of dengue fever was reported to WHO on 27 October 2015, by the health authorities of Egypt. The outbreak is occurring in a village in the Dayrout district of Assiut governorate, Middle Upper Egypt region. A total of 253 cases were identified between 1-31 October 2015.

In response to the outbreak, surveillance is being carried out in the surrounding villages and districts for early detection of cases and entomological surveillance and vector control measures have been implemented. A team of experts are carrying out an investigation into the outbreak.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
