Further cases of dengue fever have been reported from the US state of Hawaii. The Department of Health is investigating an outbreak on Hawaii Island (also known as Big Island) where 88 confirmed locally acquired cases have been reported. A further 131 suspected cases have been excluded as dengue virus infection.
One unrelated imported case of dengue fever has recently been confirmed on Oahu Island.
Dengue virus is not endemic to Hawaii, however, imported cases do occassionally occur; this current cluster of cases is the first since 2011.

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
