Cholera in Tanzania (Update)

Cholera is an ongoing problem in Tanzania; several outbreaks have been reported this year (2015); a total of 19 regions have been affected. At present between 10-13 regions of the country are reporting cholera cases.

As of 12 November 2015, a total of 8220 cases including 117 deaths have been reported from the affected regions. The worst affected region is Dar es Salaam with 51% of cases (4269), followed by Tanga with 16% of cases (1304) reported since the beginning of October 2015.

In Zanzibar, the islands of Pemba and Unguja have reported a total of 295 cases with 3 deaths since the beginning of the outbreak on 19 September 2015. The worst affected region is Unguja with 64% of all reported cases.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
