Measles in Malaysia

26 November 2015

Over the past three years, the number of measles cases in Malaysia has trebled. Thus far in 2015, a total of 602 cases have been reported; this compares with 235 cases in 2014 and 195 in 2013. Measles outbreaks have also increased from 11 in 2014, to 37 thus far in 2015.

In 2014 and 2015, between 50-60% of cases had not been immunised against measles. District health departments will be carrying out vaccination programmes for children under the age of six in areas reporting measles.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-13 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months. Unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
