Malaria (Plasmodium Knowlesi) in Brunei

08 December 2015

Public Health officials in Singapore have reported two cases of Plasmodium knowlesi malaria in returning travellers.

The two cases were part of a group of 24 adolescents and 3 adults who spent time in Temburong National Park, eastern Brunei on a camping trip between 2-9 November 2015. The travellers developed symptoms on 20 November 2015, and P. knowlesi malaria was subsequently laboratory-confirmed.

Advice for Travellers

Malaria risk is low in all areas of Brunei, however human P.knowlesi infection is reported. Mosquito bite avoidance is advised for Brunei rather that antimalarial prophylaxis due to the low risk. Bite avoidance measures are always particularly important when sleeping in forested areas.
