Cholera in Haiti (Update)

14 December 2015

Despite intensified control efforts, the cholera outbreak in Haiti is ongoing and new cases have increased during the month of November 2015. Between 22-28 November, 1093 new cases and 13 hospital deaths were reported compared with 268 new cases and 1 death between 13-19 September 2015. The Artibonite, North, North West, South East and metropolitan Port-au-Prince are the worst affected with 227, 164, 152, 101 and 149 new cases, respectively.

A total of 31,396 cholera cases and 297 related fatalities have been reported in Haiti between 1 January-28 November 2015.

Factors contributing to the upward trend in the last two months include: heavy rains in October and November that facilitated disease transmission, difficulties accessing safe drinking water, poor sanitation and hygiene in vulnerable communities e.g. remote municipalities and temporary camps for returnees from Dominican Republic.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
