Microcephaly in Brazil (Update)

15 December 2015

The Ministry of Health for Brazil has updated WHO on the unexpected increase in the number of cases of microcephaly among newborns in the northeast of Brazil.

As of 5 December 2015, 1761 suspected cases of microcephaly, including 19 deaths, have been identified. The cases are located in 422 municipalities of 14 federal units. The worst affected states are Pernambuco and Paraíba with 804 and 316 cases respectively. Fatalities were reported in Rio Grande do Norte (7), Sergipe (4), Bahia (2), Rio de Janeiro (2), Ceará (1), Maranhão (1), Paraíba (1) and Piauí (1).

The reason for the increase in this congenital defect has not been identified as yet and requires further investigation. WHO has provided technical experts to assist the MoH in various areas, including arbovirus virology, epidemiology and disease surveillance.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Due to the possible link between Zika virus infection and birth defects, pregnant women are urged to be particularly vigilant in preventing mosquito bites.

Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
