Cholera in Kenya (Update)

21 December 2015

The cholera outbreak that was first identified in Kenya in December 2014, has continued to spread throughout 17 counties of the country during 2015.

On 23 November 2015, cholera was confirmed in the Dadaab Refugee Camp complex, on the border with Somalia. Around 541 suspected cases have been reported by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) who have provided a hospital in the complex. At present most of the cases are located in Dagahaley camp. With the onset of the rains MSF have concerns about further spread within the complex due to worsening living conditions.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
