Zika Virus Infection in Barbados

Zika virus continues to be reported from the Caribbean Islands and the Americas. The Ministry of Health for the island of Barbados has reported to the media the first 3 confirmed cases. The Caribbean Public Health Agency in Trinidad and Tobago received 8 laboratory samples from suspected cases in Barbados, 3 of which confirmed Zika virus infection.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Due to the possible link between Zika virus infection and birth defects, pregnant women are urged to be particularly vigilant in preventing mosquito bites.

Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
