Zika Virus in Bolivia

The media has reported that the Ministy of Health has confirmed the first autochthonus case of Zika virus infection in Bolivia. The case has been laboratory confirmed and is a 32-year-old woman from the town of Portachuelo, Santa Cruz department in the east of the country. The woman has no history of recent travel to another region of Bolivia or to another country.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Due to the possible link between Zika virus infection and birth defects, pregnant women are urged to be particularly vigilant in preventing mosquito bites.

Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
