Circulating Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus in Laos (Update)

One new case of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) was reported in the last week. The case was identified in Longxan district of Xaysomboune province. This brings the total number of cVDPV1 cases to 7.

Subnational Immunization Days are schedules between 26-31 January 2016. National Immunization Days are also planned beteween 15-28 February 2016. All campaigns are targeting up to the age of 15 years.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of polio vaccine according to the UK childhood schedule. It is recommended that travellers have a poliomyelitis booster (or course) if not already protected. Travellers should also take precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.
