Yellow Fever in Angola (Suspected)

The Ministry of Health in Luanda has reported an outbreak of yellow fever to the media. The outbreak is occurring in Viana municipality, Luanda province in the northwest of the country on the coast. The first case was identified on 5 December 2015; a total of 23 suspected cases, including 7 fatalities have been reported.

Three laboratory samples sent to South Africa have confirmed yellow fever virus, however, laboratory samples sent to Dakar in Senegal await confirmation of yellow fever virus by WHO. Once confirmed, the Ministry of Health will initiate a vaccination campaign in Viana, targeting firstly children, pregnant women, health professionals and finally the population in general.

Advice for Travellers

There is a risk of yellow fever and vaccination is advised for travellers (unless contraindicated). Travellers should also take steps to avoid mosquito bites.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from all travellers over 9 months of age entering Angola.
