Dengue Fever in the United States (Hawaii) (Update)

The mayor of Big Island in Hawaii has declared a state of emergency as further cases of dengue fever have continued to be reported. The outbreak among locals was first reported on 29 October 2015, and a total of 250 confirmed cases have been identified thus far. This is the largest outbreak of dengue fever in the Hawaii since the 1940s,

Dengue virus is not endemic to Hawaii; occasionally the virus is imported by infected travellers. The outbreak on the Big Island is the first cluster of locally-acquired dengue fever since an outbreak on Oahu in 2011.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
