Circulating Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus in Laos (Update)

Two new cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) were reported from Laos in the last week. The cases were identified in the districts of Phonhong and Muen of Vientiane province in the northwest of the country. Onset of paralysis was on 18 October 2015 and 3 January 2016 respectively.

The total number of cVDPV1 cases in 2015 is now 8 and in 2016 is now 3.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of polio vaccine according to the UK childhood schedule. It is recommended that travellers have a poliomyelitis booster (or course) if not already protected. Travellers should also take precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.
