Rift Valley Fever (Human) in Uganda

15 March 2016

The Ministry of Health for Uganda is investigating an outbreak of Rift Valley fever reported last week in Kabale District in the west of the country.

The infection was confirmed at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital when samples from two suspected human cases tested positive at the Uganda Virus Research Institute based in Entebbe. This is said to be the first time that an outbreak of Rift Valley fever has been reported in Uganda.

Advice for Travellers

During epidemics of Rift Valley fever, direct transmission occurs via the aerosol route from infected animal tissues or fluids e.g. during slaughtering or butchering. All animal products should be thoroughly cooked before eating.

In addition mosquito bites have been implicated in transmission of disease therefore travellers should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
