Cholera in Zambia

An outbreak of cholera has been ongoing in Zambia since February 2016. The outbreak is occurring in the capital Lusaka and the number of suspected cases stands at 412. Those affected by the outbreak have received treatment at the Bauleni cholera treatment centre (CTC) (261 cases), Kanyama CTC (145 cases), Matero CTC (5 cases) and one patient treated in Chongwe.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
