Cholera in Somalia

31 March 2016

A cholera outbreak has been reported in the Middle Shabelle region in the south of Somalia. At least 20 deaths from cholera have been confirmed; the number of suspected cases is not mentioned in this media report. The outbreak is thought to be related to a shortage of drinking water as the commonly used Shabelle river is drying up.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
