Ebola Virus Disease in Liberia

04 April 2016

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a new laboratory-confirmed case of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Liberia. The case is a 30-year-old woman who died on 31 March 2016, during transit to hospital in the capital Monrovia. The Liberian health authorities and WHO have begun the investigation into the new case and identification of possible contacts; a meeting has been held to plan the rapid response.

This is the third flare-up of EVD since the original outbreak was declared over on 9 May 2015. WHO have reiterated that flare-ups of EVD are to be expected in the months to come, largely due to virus persistence in some survivors.

Advice for Travellers

The risk of travellers becoming infected or developing Ebola haemorrhagic fever is extremely low, unless there has been direct contact with blood or bodily fluids of dead or living infected persons or animals. Healthcare workers are at particular risk, although practising appropriate infection control should effectively prevent transmission of disease in this setting.

Travellers returning from tropical countries should always seek rapid medical attention if they develop flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, diarrhoea or general malaise) within three weeks after return, and be reminded to mention to their health care provider that they have recently travelled.
