Cholera in Malawi

UNICEF has published an update on the cholera situation in Malawi. Cholera cases have continued to be reported following the occurrance of an outbreak that began in December 2015.

Cases are reported in several districts surrounding Lake Chirwa in eastern Zomba district, close to the border with Mozambique. As of 31st March 2016, a total of 1073 cholera cases have been registered in 10 out of 28 districts. Cases, however, have been declining in recent weeks with 32 reported in the last week of March, compared with 33 new cases in the previous week.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for the average traveller, however, a good standard of food and water safety and personal hygiene should be maintained.

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera.
