Typhoid Fever in Malawi

An outbreak of typhoid fever has been reported by the media in Mchinji district in the far west of Central Region, close to the border with Zambia. Laboratory samples were collected from 18 suspected cases in the villages of Kangwere, Sepo and Chibande; all samples tested positive for typhoid and those affected received prompt treatment.

Living conditions in the affected villages was found to be poor with just 11 out of 35 homes with sanitation facilities; pit latrines in the villages were also found to be in an unsatisfactory condition. The local hospital is conducting an awareness campaign, including education on good hygiene practices and prevention of spread of infection.

Advice for Travellers

Vaccination against typhoid is usually recommended for all travellers to Malawi. Travellers should also maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and food and water precautions whist in the country.
