Yellow Fever in Angola (Update)

20 April 2016

As the yellow fever outbreak in Angola continues, with a total of 1908 suspected cases (617 confirmed) and 250 deaths reported, the decision has be taken to extend the vaccination campaign beyond Luanda to include Huambo and Benguela; 2 of the other 5 provinces reporting cases. At the end of March 2016, the yellow fever emergency vaccine stockpile was replenished and around 10 million doses are now available.

The Ministry of Health, WHO and partners are working to strengthen disease surveillance and diagnostic capacity, both within Angola and neighbouring countries, and enhance vector control, including using community-led public health education campaigns.

Yellow fever has been exported to three countries: China (11 cases), Democratic Republic of Congo (10 cases) and Kenya (2 cases).

Advice for Travellers

Yellow fever infection can easily be prevented by vaccination. Vaccination is advised for all travellers to Angola (unless contraindicated) and proof of vaccination is required for all travellers over 9 months of age entering Angola. The vaccine should be administered at least 10 days before travelling and Angola considers the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) to be valid for life.
