Cholera in Uganda

A cholera outbreak has been reported by the media in the Eastern Region of Uganda. Cholera cases have been reported from 5 districts of the region. The worst affected is Butaleja with 194 cases and 7 fatalities, followed by Namayingo with 114 cases and 6 fatalities. The remaining affected districts are: Busia, Kibuku and Sironko.

The region is experiencing ongoing heavy rains which may lead to flooding, thereby increasing the spread of cholera.

Cholera surveillance has been increased, health education including the correct use of pit latrines and cholera awareness campaigns have been launched.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
