06 May 2016

The Singapore Ministry of Health have reported that weekly cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) are at their highest since October 2013. As of 23 Apr, 12 166 cases in total have been reported to MOH so far this year. In contrast, 8 835 cases were reported between January and 25 Apr last year (2015).

Advice for Travellers

HFMD is a common viral illness which spreads rapidly among children in particular; outbreaks most often occur in children's nurseries and daycare centres. Transmission is via direct contact with nose and throat secretions and faecesĀ of an infected individual and by aerosol droplet spread. Contact with infected children should be limited and crowded situations avoided; personal hygiene and handwashing is paramount in reducing transmission of the virus.
