Cholera in Malawi

An outbreak of cholera has been reported in the districts of Karonga and Rumphi in the Northern Region of the country. The outbreak was first identified in April 2016, and 266 cases, including 13 deaths have been recorded. The worst affected district is Karonga with 225 cases and the 13 fatal cases. The outbreak began in Rumphi district on 6 May 2016, and thus far 41 cases have been reported.

The majority of affected areas are close to Lake Malawi e.g. the Traditional Authority Kilipula and Mwirang’ombe in Karonga and Luwuchi, Chitimba and Mulowe in Rumphi district. This is a media report.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
