The Catalonia Department of Health has confirmed an outbreak of enterovirus with a total of 60 cases having been detected in minors in recent weeks, 29 of which have been hospitalised after suffering a form of encephalitis. Most of the affected children and recovering well, however, 4 remain in intensive care.
Enterovirus infections are primarily transmitted by faecal-oral and respiratory routes; spread from person to person when an infected individual coughs and/or sneezes, or touches and contaminates surfaces.
