Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in Malaysia

20 June 2016

Malaysian press reports that hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) has reached outbreak proportions in Malaysia with authorities taking urgent measures to contain it. So far this year (2016), Selangor has the highest number of HFMD cases with 4441, followed by Johor (1393), Kuala Lumpur (1317), Sabah (1299), and Sarawak (1108).

Advice for Travellers

HFMD is a common viral illness which spreads rapidly among children in particular; outbreaks most often occur in children's nurseries and daycare centres. Transmission is via direct contact with nose and throat secretions and faeces of an infected individual and by aerosol droplet spread. Contact with infected children should be limited and crowded situations avoided; personal hygiene and handwashing is paramount in reducing transmission of the virus.
