Dengue Fever in Sri Lanka (Update)

Health authorities in Sri Lanka have reported 21 881 cases of dengue in the country so far this year (2016). The Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry highlighted on its website that 6674 people were infected in January 2016, 4439 in February 2016 and 3157 in June 2016. At least 31 people died from the disease in the 1st 6 months of the year (2016).

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
