Yellow Fever in Democratic Republic of Congo (Update)

25 July 2016

Due to technical issues the national laboratory in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been unable to confirm or discard any suspected cases of yellow fever (YF) for the last 4 weeks.

As of 11 July 2016 (the latest available data) the total number of notified suspected cases is 1798, 68 of which are confirmed (as of 24 June 2016) and 85 deaths. The YF cases have been reported in five of DRCs 26 provinces. Of the 68 confirmed cases, 59 were imported from Angola.

Surveillance efforts in DRC have increased and vaccination campaigns have centred on affected health zones in Kinshasa and Kongo Central. Reactive vaccination campaigns started on 20 July 2016 in Kisenso health zone in Kinshasa province and in Kahemba, Kajiji and Kisandji health zones in Kwango province.

Advice for Travellers

Yellow fever infection can easily be prevented by vaccination. Vaccination is advised for all travellers to DRC (unless contraindicated) and proof of vaccination is required for all travellers over 9 months of age entering DRC. The vaccine should be administered at least 10 days before travelling and DRC considers the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) to be valid for life.

It is essential that travellers also take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
