Lyme Disease in Switzerland

24 August 2016

According to the Federal Office of Public Health, as of the end of July, doctors across the nation had treated 22 000 people for tick bites. In comparison, the whole of 2015 saw just 14 300 visits.

The high number of tick bites is also associated with a higher number of Lyme disease cases. So far this year there have been 8400 cases of acute Lyme disease. In 2015 the figure was 5300, and there were 8700 cases in 2013.

Advice for Travellers

All travellers should be made aware of outdoor activities increasing tick exposure, e.g. walking, camping, cycling in forested areas in tick season and given advice on avoiding tick bites, prompt removal of ticks and use of appropriate clothing i.e. trousers tucked into socks.

Whilst vaccination against Lyme disease is not available, immunisation against Tick-borne Encephalitis can be obtained for travellers going to risk areas during the high risk season in spring and summer.
