Ebola Virus Disease in Northern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

15 May 2017

On 13 May the Government of DRC confirmed an outbreak of Ebola virus disease in the northern part of the country. 11 suspected cases including 3 deaths have been reported in Likati Health Zone, Bas Uele Province. Likati Health Zone is approximately 1400 km from the capital, Kinshasa and is near the border of Central African Republic. The region is hard to reach and has limited transport and communication infrastructure. On 10 May a team led by the Ministry of Health and WHO arrived in the affected region to conduct an investigation into the outbreak.

The first case was a 45-year-old male who died on 22 April. The taxi driver who drove him to hospital also became unwell and subsequently died, as did a third person who had cared for the first case. Twenty-five contacts of the deceased taxi driver who died are being followed up. Of the 11 cases, 1 has been confirmed PCR-positive for Ebola virus.

Advice to travellers

The risk of travellers becoming infected or developing Ebola virus disease is extremely low.

The following preventive measure are recommended to reduce the risk of infection:

  • Avoid direct contact with blood or body fluids of a patient or a corpse and with objects possibly contaminated
  • Avoid close contact with wild animals and consumption of ‘bush meat’
  • Avoid having unprotected sexual intercourse

Travellers returning from tropical countries should always seek rapid medical attention if they develop flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, diarrhoea or general malaise) within three weeks after return, and be reminded to mention to their health care provider that they have recently travelled.
