As of 9 June 2017, WHO reported there have been 1981 reported cases of measles across the Ethiopia, including 961 confirmed cases. There are 54 laboratory-confirmed measles outbreaks reported in the country up to 9 June 2017 of which 3 are active in Dannot and Degehamado woredas of the South Eastern Somali region and Alamata town in the Northern Tigray Region. The 54 outbreaks were across the country in Amhara (18), Addis Ababa (9), Oromia (11), SNNPR (6), Somali (5), Tigray (3) and Afar (1 outbreak). Oromia region in the South remains the most affected region with 32% of the reported cases and this is followed by Amhara (29%), Addis Ababa (15%) and SNNPR (11%). Children under 5 years were the most affected age group.
In response a phase one measles campaign was launched on 3 June 2017 in zones of the Somali Region. A further phase is planned.
Travel may increase an individual’s risk of exposure to measles virus, and facilitate the spread of disease to unvaccinated and susceptible populations. Charging for Measles Containing Vaccine:
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-13 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 4 months. Consider vaccinating all unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves, particularly if they are going to be at higher risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine, at least one month apart, are required to give adequate protection.
