The Centre for Health Protection in Hong Kong has reported two cases of locally acquired Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in 2017: both from June. The first case was reported on 9 June 2017 while a second, who presented with symptoms on 18 June 2017 was diagnosed after being admitted to hospital on 28 June .
Health and environmental authorities are working to assess the situation and prevent further infection.
Japanese encephalitis vaccine is recommended for certain travellers considered to be at risk; particularly during the high risk season. Travellers should also take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
