On 9 August 2017 the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reported 2 new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)-positive environmental samples. The most recent of these was collected on 19 July in Karachi.
The total number of polio (WPV1) cases for 2017 is 3, with the most recent case having onset of paralysis on 11 June, in Killa Abdullah, Balochistan.
Areas with recent polio cases and positive environmental samples include Rawalpindi / Islamabad and demographically connected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Quetta and Karachi.
Pakistan is classified by the WHO as a polio infected country.
