On 14 October 2017 media reported via ProMed-mail that there have been 4 cases of malaria, including 1 death in the Kilner Park area of Pretoria in recent weeks. Malaria does not usually occur in Pretoria. The source of infection is uncertain at this stage.
Malaria is usually rare or absent in most of South Africa. This remains true of Pretoria, despite these unusual cases. The risk of a traveller being infected is very low and antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is unnecessary. However, avoidance of mosquito bites is strongly recommended as the first line of defence against malaria and other mosquito-borne infections.
