Malaria in South Africa (Pretoria)

17 October 2017

On 14 October 2017 media reported via ProMed-mailLink that there have been 4 cases of malaria, including 1 death in the Kilner Park area of Pretoria in recent weeks. Malaria does not usually occur in Pretoria. The source of infection is uncertain at this stage.

Advice for travellers

Malaria is usually rare or absent in most of South Africa. This remains true of Pretoria, despite these unusual cases. The risk of a traveller being infected is very low and antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is unnecessary. However, avoidance of mosquito bites is strongly recommended as the first line of defence against malaria and other mosquito-borne infections.
