Malaria in Angola

On 22 December 2017 the World Health Organisation (WHO) Linkreported a continuing outbreak of malaria in Angola. In Benguela Province, 311 661 malaria cases were reported from January to September 2017 compared to 244 381 cases in all of 2016. In Huambo Province, 155 311 malaria cases were reported from January to September 2017, compared to 82 138 cases in the same period in 2016.

On 25 December 2017, media quoting the Angolan Government Linkreported 275 000 malaria cases (including 700 deaths) from January to November 2017 in Uíge Province.

Advice for Travellers

At this time malaria prevention advice for travellers to Angola is unchanged: the entire country is a high risk area and antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is advised.

The importance of following existing guidance including avoidance of mosquito bites at all times is emphasized.
