It is more than two years since circulation of virus-derived polio ceased in Ukraine, Madagascar and Myanmar.
TRAVAX methododology requires that polio vaccine is recommended for travellers for a total of three years following the last case report.
Polio is spread mainly through person to person contact via the faecal-oral route. Particularly in areas where sanitation is poor. Travellers should take strict precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.
Ensure the British Schedule is up to date.
Travellers should be offered a booster of polio vaccine if it has been more than 10 years since their last dose.
Further information can be found on the Poliomyelitis page.
