Polio Vaccination Recommendations for Ukraine, Madagascar and Myanmar

It is more than two years since circulation of virus-derived polio ceased in Ukraine, Madagascar and Myanmar.

  • Ukraine (last case 7 July 2015)
  • Madagascar (last case 22 August 2015)
  • Myanmar (last case 5 October 2015)

TRAVAX methododology requires that polio vaccine is recommended for travellers for a total of three years following the last case report.

Advice for Travellers

Polio is spread mainly through person to person contact via the faecal-oral route. Particularly in areas where sanitation is poor. Travellers should take strict precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.

Whom should I vaccinate for Poliomyelitis?

Ensure the British Schedule is up to date.

Travellers should be offered a booster of polio vaccine if it has been more than 10 years since their last dose.
