Update on Virus-derived Polio Status in Guinea and Laos

It is more than two years since circulation of virus-derived polio ceased in Guinea and Laos.

  • Guinea (last case 14 December 2015)
  • Laos (last case 11 January 2016)

TRAVAX methodology requires that polio vaccine is recommended in travellers for a total of three years following the last case report.

Advice for Travellers

Polio is spread mainly through person to person contact via the faecal-oral route. Particularly in areas where sanitation is poor. Travellers should take strict precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.

Whom should I vaccinate for Poliomyelitis?

Ensure the British Schedule is up to date.

Travellers should be offered a booster of polio vaccine if it has been more than 10 years since their last dose.
