Polio in Papua New Guinea (Port Moresby) - Update 1

11 September 2018

A case of polio has been confirmed in a 6-year old boy at 5-Mile Settlement in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. This is the first case of polio to be seen in the capital since the start of the current outbreak. The National Department of Health made the announcement after testing was carried out in Australia. The case is linked to the ongoing polio outbreak in Papua New Guinea.

Advice for Travellers

WHO recommends that "all travellers to polio-affected areas be fully vaccinated against polio. Residents (and visitors for more than 4 weeks) from infected areas should receive an additional dose of OPV or inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) within 4 weeks to 12 months of travel."

For further information see Poliomyelitis.
