Pertussis (Whooping Cough) in Hong Kong

14 January 2019

According to media quoting public health officials in Hong Kong 110 people contracted pertussis (whooping cough) in 2018, compared to 69 cases in 2017. Of the cases reported in 2018, 44 were infants aged 6 months or younger. Local authorities are advising pregnant women to be vaccinated so immunity can be passed on their children.

Advice for Travellers

  • If travelling with infants or young children - be aware that the disease still persists in some regions of the world and unvaccinated children are susceptible to this severe infection.
  • Ensure British Vaccination Schedule up to date/complete.

When to Consider Vaccination

Pertussis vaccine is included in the British Vaccination Schedule and is not routinely used for travellers.
